EDITOR TIPS AND TRICKS

BY SLODRAGON

Editor Use; Basic Information

S4 Editor Tute #1

OK.. Here's a quickie...Open the editor and click "New". You'll get a window with some map size choices. Pick a 256 x 256, which is a small one...click OK, you'll get a small ocean with a red flag in the center. Look to the top of the editor and you'll see some numbers going across. These are "Zooms" Just tick one or two of them to zoom in or out...comes in handy for detail work. You'll also see two small floating windows (tool settings and tool selection) Just drag them down near the bottom for easy access. If you have the Trojans you'll also have a minimap window. Drag that one out of the way but still visible enough to monitor your work. I usually put it in the left bottom corner. The other two I put in the right bottom corner with just their title bar still showing...Then I just drag them up when I need to change a setting or selection.

One of your small windows you dragged to the bottom is the "tool selection" window. Drag it back up so you can see it better, then tick the plus sign beside select type of terrain.... then tick ground...then select grass.... Now look at the tool settings window, and tick one of the four tools, select "WIDE". Now slide the two tool windows back down near the bottom, and place your cursor near the red flag...press the left mouse button and "paint" grass to your hearts content.

For now...Fill up the screen, and play with all the other terrains and the size tools. Make some desert, some mud, and use the others too...

Look around in the "Tool selection" window once you are tired of placing terrain, and look for, "change elevations" (not for water) tick the small plus sign beside it and select "raise terrain gently" now pick one of the "size" tools again "WIDE" or "medium", press the left mouse button and drag it around a bit...You'll see what happens...Try the other size tools, then try some more elevations...Just experiment for now...play with different tool sizes and terrain types... make mountains, valleys...whatever turns you on...just have fun. Remember tho...When you paint terrain its "dead" flat. You can't make a valley without raising some terrain first.....You can also tick the speckle box, and it will help you make more realistic terrain. Just try everything and get comfortable with
what each feature does.

Now click "file" at the top left of the editor, and click "save as" Give your map a name. Something like "testmap_01" and click save.

In the next lesson we'll play with rivers and water. tweak the beaches a bit, and maybe make a lake or two..........
