EDITOR TIPS AND TRICKS
SloDragon's S4 Tutorial #3
Landmass resources.
Mountains with ore. Seas with fish. Land
with trees, building stone, and rivers and ponds with fish.
We have already learned to create rivers and ponds and lakes.
Now we'll populate them with fish for the players to catch.
Select the "place raw materials"
catagory, and inside you'll find another "place raw materials"
catagory, then inside it you'll find a "place fish (water)"
catagory. Tick this and set your tool to #2 setting. Make
sure the "speckle" box is un-ticked. Then move to
one of your rivers and starting at one end. Press the LMB
and drag along the course of your river to place fish in it.
Then move to your pond/lake shore, and using the full width
of your tool place all round the shoreline. Its not necessary
to place fish in the center of your pond/lake as the fisherman
cannot reach them there. Now do the same with your beaches.
But only in areas where a fishing hut can be built nearby.
You'll also notice that when you select "place fish (water)"
you'll see many things on your landmass disappear. This is
normal. Once you switch back to another catagory. Everything
will reappear.
If you don't already have some mountains
made, then make one near each player start, but just out of
the small towers control radius. Raise it up using the "raise
steeply" setting, and the number #3 tool, and make sure
your "speckle" box is ticked. Just try to make a
natural looking shape. Not too large, but not too small. Now
you should have a nice green grassy mountain. We can't place
ore resources on grass, So we must now paint the mountain
with the "rock" texture. Select "set type of
terrain" then "ground" then "rock".
then using the #2 tool setting. Paint your mountain with the
rock texture. then switch to the "snow" texture
and sprinkle a tiny bit of snow on the very tip top of your
mountain.
Now switch back to "place raw materials">"place
raw materials">"place coal" Untick the speckle
box, and using the #2 tool setting, place coal, iron, gold,
sulphur and some stone on your mountain. You won't need much
stone ore as we're going to be placing building stone quarrys
on the land. Settlers use more coal than anything else so
make sure you place more coal than iron and gold. And place
more iron than gold, and place more gold than sulphur.
Now switch back to the "Place objects"
catagory. And select "place building stone quarry".
Inside you will see 13 different sizes of stone. use 10 of
the sizes available, and using the #1 (smallest) tool, and
make sure "speckle" is un-ticked. and place 2 or
3 stones inside the control radius of each players tower,
and the rest of the 10 just outside. Then if your map is small,
place another stone quarry halfway between the players, and
use all 13 stone sizes. If your map is large, place 2 more
stone quarrys that the players can expand to.
Trees..
Now select the "trees" catagory
and place 4 or 5 trees of different types inside the players
start area. Then place all other trees outside of the start
areas. Place them thinly for the most part, but make a few
thick small forest areas here and there.
Now select the "place bushes and grasses
catagory, and place 6 of each plant type, and scatter them
around your whole map amongst the trees and near your building
stone quarrys.
Next select the "large stones"
catagory. Use mostly the smaller sized stones, and place them
where they look good to you. But remember ! The settlers can
build on most plants. But they cannot build on stones. So
place just a few for now in areas you think the players will
not need for settlement growth. The large stones look nice.
But use sparingly for the reasons already mentioned.
Next select the "plants and other"
and place 10 of each of the plants, bark, and boughs(or more)
scattered around your map. Place a snowman on the mountains
if you wish. Place a scarecrow on some nice flat land where
farming would be good as a clue to the player. Also try some
of the other items in here just to see what they look like.
But just place 1 of each if you decide to use any of them.
fewer are better I think.
There you are. Your land is ready for Settlers. That will
be the next tute. And also the setting of the necessary "victory"
conditions. And how to go about writing your story and hints
for your map. But for now don't forget to SAVE
your work...
