SloDragon's S4 Tutorial #4
Populating your map with Settlers.
Well our map should now be ready for our
settlers to be placed. This first map will be designed for
"easy" difficulty. We will give the AI player (the
enemy) the same people and goods, as the human player will
start with. On many maps the AI player/players are given extra
starting goods and buildings for a more difficult game for
the human player. This can only be learned with the experience
that comes from playing and creating and testing lots of maps.
Select the "place settlers" category
and select "carriers". Using the #1 (smallest) tool
setting, and make sure the "speckle" box is un-ticked.
And that the "Red" player is selected.
Place:
10
carriers
5 diggers
5 builders |
5 geologists
(look in specialists)
5 pioneers
1 priest
(look in specialists) |
2 woodcutters
1 forester
1 stonecutter |
1 baker
1 miller
1 butcher
2 farmers
1 animal rancher
1 water worker |
6 miners
1 tool smith
2 smelters
3 smiths |
5 thieves
(look in specialists)
10 swordsmen
10 bowmen |
Now switch to the blue player and do the
same for him in his tower area.
Now select "place goods piles"
then tool piles and place one pile of each tool.
Now select "food" and place one
pile of each food, but don't place any animals, but don't
forget to place water. its at the bottom under the animals.
Now select "building Materials"
and place 4 piles of stone and lumber each. Now select "place
pile quantities" and "set value to 2" and hover
your cursor over your tool pile of axes, and click the LMB
and your pile will reduce from 8 to 2.
Now select the appropriate value and set your tool piles
to this:
hammer.......leave at 8
shovel..........leave at 8
pickaxe.......3
axe..............4
saw..............2
scythe.........2
fishing rod...2 |
Lumber..........leave at 8
Stone blocks..leave at 8 |
bread.........leave at 8
meat..........leave at 8
fish............leave at 8
water.........leave at 8 |
Now switch back to the red player and do the same for him.
OK, this is the point where you should open
the tool settings window and click the "Player"
button and double check your settings. Make sure the Red player
is set to "Human" "team 1" in the "team
data" area, and the blue player is set to "free
selection" "team 2". You can also give the
AI player a name. Just add it to the "Computer Player
Name" field.
Ok, now select "Edit" at the top
of the editor and select "victory conditions" tick
the "Activate Player victory conditions" box. And
also tick the box by the number 2. Now your enemy "MUST"
be defeated for you to win.
Now select the "Description in English"
tab. And in the large area type this TITLE@My First MAP@No
story yet. When you view your map in the game you'll see what
the "@" signs do.
Now in the smaller area type this "no
hints yet" And click the "OK" button.
Now "SAVE" your map Click file
at the top of the editor and then "SAVE" Then click
"FILE" again and "EXPORT". The map will
compile and you'll get a window stating that your map has
exported.....OR....you may get a window that says you have
an invalid player start. If you get that you must move the
player start flag to a bit more of an open space.
Make the correction and "EXPORT"
again. Keep trying until your map exports ok. Then start S4
and play your map. This is when you can look for problems
and be inspired for the story for your map, and any hints
you may want to pass along to the player.
Just open your map in the editor again. Add
the story and hints, "SAVE" the map again and "EXPORT"
And congratulations on your first playable Settlers 4 Map.
Hopefully these tutes and your resulting
map will inspire you to create many more fine S4 maps... I
look forward to playing them.
