To make something like the picture above:

- Use the river tool to make several rivers and connect them. This will result in something that looks like a lake with small pieces of grassland in the middle.

- Now decorate it with lots of mint, different flowers and a couple trees.

 

This is what I did to create the desert:

- Use the dusty road texture and speckle some spots of grass on it.

- Decorate it with a limited amount of mint, maybe some mug worst and thistles, some desert shrubs, brown stones, a couple of palm trees and don't forget a cactus here and there.

I think the dusty road texture looks pretty good as desert. But of course you can't use it for Mayans, they won't be able to grow their agaves.
