Quality is often more important than quantity....level 2 and 3 soldiers are far more effective than the level 1. (I only ever produce level 1 if I've run out of gold or I have a large surplus of weapons.)

Build a decent construction industry as one of your first priorities. This is crucial. If you don't have enough wood and stone, this will slow you down enormously. Increase the amount of diggers and builders too if you have the tools and available settlers...this will make building faster.

Make sure you always have plenty of carriers...this speeds production up also and always gives you available carriers to turn into soldiers when you need them in a hurry.In general you need 2 coal mines to 1 iron and 1 coal mine to 1 gold. Increase your soldiers strength by building eye catchers.

Buildings that are dependant on each other should be built close together so carriers don't have to walk a long way.
