How does the foundation cart/ second eco sector work?
Before you can do anything else, you first have to produce a foundation cart in the Vehicle Hall. To transform a ‘normal’ cart into a foundation cart, click on the ‘foundation cart’ button in the cart’s context menu. Once you have issued your instructions in this way, the cart will be filled with ten Pioneers, eight units of wood, four units of stone and two hammers. You will also need a donkey, for which you will hopefully already have set up a donkey farm! Once the donkey cart has been loaded up to bursting point, you will be able to select it and send it off to wherever you like on the map (just make sure that it’s not too near the enemy if possible).

Once it has arrived at its final destination, you can use the cart to set up a new colony by clicking on the little flag (“found settlement”) on the left hand side of the screen. You can then sit back and watch your Pioneers in action as they make new land your own. Once this new area is big enough, you can then build a Marketplace and thus really get your second eco sector off the ground. To do this, you will first have to transform your Pioneers back into Carriers and then turn them into Builders – use the Settlers menu for this particular re-training operation. You will also have to make sure that you have a Marketplace in your original settlement, as this is where your transport route to your new colony will be set up. Then it’s up to your trusty donkeys to carry off all the goods and raw materials needed to the new offshoot of your settlement.

How can I increase my troops’ military strength?
Military strength increases in proportion to the growth of your settlement. Don’t forget that Eyecatchers do more for your troops’ morale than other buildings. And if a group of soldiers has a Squad Leader to get the troops in order, you’ll be surprised at how effective they become.

What is manna needed for?

Without manna, your Priests are not able to cast any of the wonderful spells which their magical powers place at their disposal.

What can I use gold bars for?

Gold bars are required for building large Temples, eyecatchers and also for recruiting soldiers of levels 2 (one gold bar) and 3 (two bars needed).

And you won’t be able to shake up your soldiers with a Squad Leader unless you have produced at least three shiny bars of gold…

How are ships repaired and how can I fill them up with ammunition??
You will first have to sail your ship into the Shipyard, where it will be repaired automatically. You can also load up your ships with ammunition at the Shipyards. If you play the Romans or the Maya you must produce the ammunition in the ammunition hut first. The war ships and war machines of the Vikings use 15 mana units for every shot and don´t need to get armed.

How can I use ships to attack enemy military installations?
You will only be able to launch an attack on an enemy military building from the high seas if it is near the coast.

How can I use my warships and war machines to attack the enemy?
Your instruments of war can only be used to attack military targets such as enemy Towers. Don’t forget that Viking instruments of war need manna to do their destructive work.

How are war machines operated, how do they fire and what targets can they attack?

You direct war machines by using your right mouse button. You can set your war machines’ sights on all military buildings as well as the enemy’s own instruments of war. The war machines will start firing automatically, when they are in attack range. As for the ammunition required by each individual race, take a look at the manual.

How should I deploy Saboteurs?
Saboteurs can attack all enemy buildings and destroy them.

How do I recruit specialists?
Go to the ‘Settlers’ menu and open up the ‘Specialists” sub-menu (you can hit the ’F’ key to do this). Select the Specialist you require and use the arrow keys to enter the number desired.

How can specialists be turned back into Carriers?
In the Settlers menu, you can use the arrow keys to reduce the number of Specialists. Alternatively, you can select the relevant specialist(s) and then click on the button to transform them.

What exactly is a trade route?
If you have set up a second eco sector or you have a fellow player who wants to do business with you, you can set up a trade route between your two sectors or between his settlement and your own. All you have to do is to ensure that a Marketplace is present at both locations. Goods can then be transported between the two Marketplaces.

How can I find units on the map after I have recruited them?
The ‘Find Settler’ menu allows you to locate specialists and military units.

What exactly are the buttons for in the Weaponsmith’s Works?
The pop-up menus in the Smiths’ Works and the Barracks allow you to enter the quantities you would like of particular military units, tools or weapons. This will help you to make use of your resources as efficiently as possible and react quickly to changing circumstances in the game.

How come my opponent has encroached on to my territory but hasn’t actually attacked me?
From time to time, your opponent may decide to have his soldiers patrol his borders. If there are no military buildings or units within range, you will not be attacked.

How can I get soldiers to retreat from a battle?
Select the group you would like to withdraw and hold down the ALT key. Then right-click on the location where you would like your soldiers to go without getting into the thick of the action.

How can I add a Squad Leader to a group of soldiers?
Send the Squad Leader off to join a group of soldiers and then draw a frame around the ones you wish to benefit from your senior man’s knowledge and experience. If your selection includes more than one Squad Leader, only one will be attached to the group selected. Then hold down the CTRL key and, on the top row of your keyboard, press a number between 1 and 0. The Squad Leader will then be assigned to the group of soldiers with this number. Subsequently, you can simply hit that number to select the group.

How can I carry out trade between two islands?
To supply a second island with goods and raw materials, you will have to have a Harbor on both islands. First you’ll be needing a foundation cart and a ferry to transport it across the water. Once your Pioneers have occupied a sufficient area of land, you can then set about building a Harbor on your island colony. Once you have entered the trading route from the original Harbor to the second one, you will be able to transport goods to the second island.

How can I delete saved games?
You can only delete saved games by using the Windows DELETE function. The games you have saved are to be found in the Save folder of your THE SETTLERS IV directory on your hard disk.

Where should I plant the agaves of the Mayans?
The agaves are growing only in the desert.

How can I control the thieves?
Your thieves steal the enemy goods automatically when you right click on them. After they have taken the goods they return back to your homeland. If you want to control them on their way back you must press the ALT key.

Is a question missing here? If you have any further questions or comments, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
